Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng is in Japan for a four-day trip.
Leading a legislative delegation, Wang arrived in Tokyo Monday night.
The delegation visited Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple, Tuesday morning to pray for peace.
In a meeting with an official of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Sadakazu Tanigaki, Wang called on Japan to support Taiwan’s bid to join regional trade bodies. These include the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Wang also said he hopes Taiwan and Japan will be able to sign a trade agreement soon.
Tanigaki mentioned Taiwan’s official name, the Republic of China, several times during the meeting, a gesture that one KMT lawmaker said was meaningful.
During lunch with the chairman of the Interchange Association, Japan, Tadashi Imai, Wang said relations between Taiwan and Japan have never been better. Wang also said the two democracies are helping peace and stability in the Asia Pacific.
