Taiwan develops new test to detect Alzheimer’s disease

Taiwanese scientists have developed a new blood test that can offer early detection for Alzheimer’s disease.

The research team behind the study was led by Horng Herng-er, a professor of electro-optical science and technology from National Taiwan Normal University. The test is based on immunomagnetic reduction. The researchers say it can detect early signs of Alzheimer's and even mild cognitive impairment, with 85% accuracy. Horng said the test, which can be completed in five hours, is faster and safer than a spinal tap.

The technology is already undergoing clinical tests at four Taiwanese hospitals, including the National Taiwan University Hospital. The trials are set to be completed by the end of the year. The new blood test is also set to receive European Union CE and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) certification in the near future. Researchers will also apply to Taiwan’s FDA in 2016 for marketing.

Currently there are about 44 million people around the world who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. There are more than 100,000 patients with the disease in Taiwan.
