The secretary-general of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says his current trip to the United States will help give Washington a better understanding of the party.
The official -- Joseph Wu -- made the remarks in Washington DC on Wednesday. Wu also serves as the DPP’s representative to the United States. His current trip to the US will involve meetings with government officials, congress members, and scholars. Discussions will cover Taiwanese politics, trade, national defense, and relations with China.
In response to comments that the US is pressuring the DPP to adopt a more China-friendly platform, Wu said his trip is an opportunity for the DPP to clarify its stance. He also said that the US supports Taiwan’s democracy and peaceful cross-strait relations.
Meanwhile, DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is set to visit the US in June. She is widely tipped as a favorite in next year’s presidential election.
