The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has announced that it hopes to see a long-awaited summit between MAC Minister Hsia Li-yan and his Mainland counterpart Zhang Zhijun take place before the middle of the year.
The announcement comes following questions from Taiwan Solidarity Union legislators on Wednesday.
An MAC official said Taiwanese and Mainland authorities are discussing a possible meeting between Hsia and Zhang, but the two sides have yet to make any official plans.
The MAC official said once the meeting takes place, Hsia and Zhang will discuss topics including the Mainland’s unilateral authorization of a flight route that Taiwan’s government fears could pose a danger to aviation safety. The two will also discuss issues related to Kinmen, an island off the China coast that is administered by Taiwan.
Meanwhile, another cross-strait meeting has been arranged between the heads of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) and China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS). This meeting will be held in the historic city of Xi’an on April 10.
