Former Vice President Vincent Siew has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Boao Forum for Asia. The annual forum is currently under way in the southern Chinese province of Hainan.
On Saturday morning Siew and Xi shook hands and posed for pictures. However, the two only spoke for about a minute, which was very different from the meetings that lasted for up to 40 minutes in the past.
Executive of the Taiwan-based Cross-Strait Common Market Foundation, Chen Te-sheng, who is also a member of the Taiwanese delegation, said the length of the meeting is not important. Chen said what is really important is whether there is trust between the two sides.
