Cross-strait supervisory bill to be reviewed at legislative committee
Wang Jin-pyng

The legislature is back in operation Friday for the first time in over three weeks after a student-led occupation ended late Thursday.

The floor session called by Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng on Friday morning lasted only about seven minutes. But it was an important step forward for the legislators who seek to resume parliamentary duties and meet the demands of the protesters.

Before the brief meeting was adjourned, lawmakers agreed to refer a proposed bill on closer oversight of all cross-strait agreements to the Internal Administration Committee. It will review seven different versions of the proposed legislation.

Speaking to reporters outside the legislature after the meeting, Wang thanked the public for its understanding and support.

“We hope our society can become more peaceful," said Wang. "We should all put aside our differences and be more tolerant and forgiving of each other. It will be good for our country and our people.”

Wang said that taxpayers' money will not be used to restore or repair damage to legislative buildings caused by the extended student occupation.

Meanwhile, Wang also said he respects the ruling party’s decision to continue the legal battle to revoke his party membership.
