Top US envoy reaffirms importance of Taiwan Relations Act
35 years of friendship

Director of the American Institute in Taiwan Christopher Marut has reaffirmed the importance of the Taiwan Relations Act. He was speaking at an event marking 35 years since the US Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act. Marut is the de facto US ambassador to Taiwan.

The Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) is a 1979 piece of legislation that forms the framework for US-Taiwan relations in the absence of formal ties.

In his remarks, Marut said that the US-Taiwan partnership established under the TRA has helped Taiwan build a strong friendship that will continue to grow stronger.

“These are just a few of the examples of the things that we’re so privileged to do on behalf of this important partnership, a partnership which contributes to regional prosperity and stability, and remains a key element of the US strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific. The Taiwan Relations Act is an enduring piece of legislation that continues to guide all that we do," said Marut.

"Taiwan has earned a respected place in the world. Thanks to the Taiwan Relations Act, over the past 35 years, the United States and Taiwan have enjoyed a firm foundation of friendship that we continue to build today,” he said.
