Legislature to resume operations on Friday after students leave on Thursday
Student protestors clearing out of the legislature

The student protestors will end their occupation of the legislature on Thursday evening. Legislature president Wang Jin-pyng said the legislature will open again on Friday. Student protestors have been occupying the legislature for over 3 weeks over a cross-strait trade in services agreement.

Students have demanded that the legislature enact a monitoring system for cross-strait agreements. Wang said that lawmakers will meet on Friday and put 7 versions of a draft bill to monitor cross-strait agreements on the agenda. These will also be sent to a government committee for review.

The head of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus Ker Chien-ming said that they will make sure the legislature meets the demands of the students. The students have demanded that the legislature first pass legislation monitoring cross-strait agreements before it reviews the trade in services agreement with China. He said that the ruling Kuomintang should not think they can use their majority seats to push their agendas through the legislature.

Kuomintang lawmaker Alex Fei said that the Kuomintang wants the cross-strait monitoring mechanism to be passed as soon as possible. The ruling party would also like the review of the cross-strait trade in services agreement to occur simultaneously.
