Taiwan will import its first 400 tons of pork from France at the end of May. That’s after Taiwan added France to its list of pork suppliers in March this year.
Prior to March, French pork had not been allowed into Taiwan because of swine fever. It has been ten years since the epidemic cleared up.
Taiwan’s representative to France, Michel Lu, said that Taiwan’s agriculture council is taking measures to balance out domestic supply and demand of pork. One measure is to open up its markets to pork imports. Lu said France has been one of the most aggressive countries vying to export its pork to Taiwan. Lu said the French pork imports will be an important step in enhancing trade relations between the two countries.
The May shipment from France will arrive in time to meet a rise in pork demand for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival and Ghost Festival in Taiwan.
