Taiwan is facing a new wave of COVID-19 infections, which could reach a peak surpassing summer 2023. Medical professionals warn that, alongside the elderly, those who are overweight or obese are at increased risk.

Former emergency physician and bariatric specialist Dr. Chen Wei-long (陳威龍) said on Tuesday that individuals with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) are significantly more likely to experience severe illness or death after contracting COVID-19, with studies showing their risk of death is about 34% higher than average.

Chen explains that obesity can weaken the immune system and make it harder for the body to fight off respiratory infections, increasing the chances of pneumonia and even respiratory failure.

However, he adds that there is good news as the risks associated with obesity can be reversed. He says people who lose weight can reduce their risk to the same level as those with a healthy BMI. He encourages middle-aged adults to take this opportunity to review their health and consider seeking medical help to manage weight and improve immunity.

Health authorities expect the current COVID-19 wave to peak around late June or early July.
