Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Frank Wu (吳豊山) calls on China to replace confrontation with dialogue and containment with exchanges in the joint meeting of directors and supervisors on Friday. Wu said that he has been emphasizing Taiwan’s goodwill since he took office, and he hopes that China can respect and understand Taiwan.
The chairman emphasized that the words "united front" are commonly used on the other side of the strait, but this is a bad phrase in Taiwan. He pointed out recent attempts at infiltration and division, saying that China says they want to promote peaceful development across the strait, but behaves contrary to their words. Wu adds that various Chinese institutions frequently and frivolously make extremely contemptuous statements to Taiwan. He expressed his hope that they will understand that these words of humiliation, provocation, and ridicule are extremely unhealthy, and it is better not to say them.
Wu pointed out that China was bullied by the great powers in the 19th century but has risen as a great world power. However, the same is true for Taiwan, which has suffered foreign rule, colonial rule, and high-pressure rule for 400 years. He said that if China can think from the perspective of others, they can see clearly that both countries share weal and woe and realize that peaceful development together is a rare opportunity in history.
