Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung (林佳龍) welcomed a visiting delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) on Monday.

According to a Foreign Ministry press release on Tuesday, the minister met with MEPs Reinis Pozņaks, Beatrice Timgren, and European Parliament Policy Advisor Jens Vornøe. During the meeting, Lin thanked the European Parliament for passing a resolution in October last year opposing China’s distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. He said that although Taiwan and Europe are geographically distant, they are closely connected by their shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.

Lin stressed the importance of Taiwan-Europe cooperation and pointed to Taiwan’s efforts to build a resilient and China-free supply chain amid the current complex global situation. He also mentioned the upcoming 2025 “European Taiwan Culture Year,” jointly promoted with the Culture Ministry to deepen European understanding of Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage through a series of events.

In response, Latvian MEP Reinis Pozņaks drew parallels with his own country's experiences under the threat of a powerful neighbor and said he closely follows the situation in the Taiwan Strait. He stressed the need for democratic nations to stand united against authoritarian expansion to jointly defend universal values.

The Foreign Ministry said this delegation is the second from the European Parliament to visit Taiwan, following a cross-party delegation visit in February.
