Investigation into Taiwanese with Chinese residency prepares for second wave

The first wave of investigations into Taiwanese enlisted personnel and civil servants’ Chinese residency status concluded at the end of April. A second wave targeting more civil servants and public school teachers will take place next, according to Deputy Interior Minister Ma Shih-yuan (馬士元) this Monday.

The Mainland Affairs Council states that Taiwanese citizens who obtain Chinese Resident Identity Cards, residence permits, or related documentation will forfeit their Taiwanese citizenship as detailed in the Cross-Strait Act Article 9-1.

Taiwan’s Immigration Agency has required around 12,000 former Chinese nationals to submit a certificate proving their loss of nationality, explained Ma. He added that the agency is awaiting a response from more than 8,000 of those, many of whom are themselves waiting for documentation from the Straits Exchange Foundation. Ma said the Interior Ministry will provide assistance to individuals who encounter difficulties obtaining the relevant documents.

Civil servants investigated as part of the second wave will include teachers of public universities, junior high schools, senior high schools, and other academic institutions.
