U.S.-based advocacy group Freedom House held its annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, highlighting Taiwan’s unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights in the face of mounting external pressure. Taiwan was honored with the first-ever Beacon Award.
The event, held in Washington, D.C., recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of freedom and democracy. Taiwan’s Representative to the United States, Ambassador Alexander Yui (俞大㵢), accepted the award on behalf of the Taiwanese government. In a Facebook post, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. quoted Yui as saying the award reflects the collective efforts of Taiwan’s government, its people, and its vibrant civil society.
Also honored were U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Roger Wicker, who received the Leadership Award for their principled commitment to American leadership and support for frontline defenders of democracy in Ukraine, Taiwan, and Belarus.
Past recipients of the Leadership Award include then–Vice President Joe Biden, the late Senator John McCain, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senator Lindsey Graham.
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado received the Freedom Award for her outstanding leadership in the struggle for liberty and democracy. Crimean Tatar human rights advocate Server Mustafayev, currently imprisoned, was presented with the Alfred Moses Liberty Award for his extraordinary courage as a political prisoner.
