Taiwan has been included in the Tokyo MOU “white list” for the eighth consecutive year, according to the Transportation Ministry’s Maritime and Port Bureau.

The Tokyo Memorandum of Understanding, or Tokyo MOU, is one of the most active regional port State control organizations in the world, consisting of 22 member Authorities in the Asia-Pacific region. The main purpose of the organization is to eliminate potential maritime safety and pollution risks that could arise from subpar ships. While Taiwan is not a member, it still abides by the maritime regulations outlined by the regulatory group, which conducts regular safety inspections on foreign ships visiting Asia.

The Tokyo MOU released the latest annual report on maritime management performance in May, according to the Maritime and Port Bureau. Not only was Taiwan once again included in the white list for the eighth year running, but it also moved up from the fourteenth to the sixth position, marking its best performance to date.

The Maritime and Port Bureau pointed out that as Taiwan falls within the regulatory scope of the MOU, this review reflects the performance of Taiwanese ships, rather than ships arriving in Taiwan.
