WATCH: Myanmar crackdown frees thousands, 55 Taiwanese return from human trafficking

Taiwan has rescued 55 nationals from scam compounds in Myanmar's KK Park, marking its first major repatriation effort. The crackdown follows Myanmar’s release of over 7,000 trafficking victims to neighboring countries.

In recent years, many Taiwanese have been lured into scam operations at fraud factories in KK Park, located in Myawaddy Township, Myanmar. The local government has recently launched a crackdown, releasing large numbers of trafficking victims into Thailand.

Acting on intelligence, Taiwanese authorities escorted 55 nationals back to Taiwan early Wednesday morning—marking the first large-scale rescue of Taiwanese victims from Myanmar. Among the returnees, the oldest is 62 and the youngest just 19 years old. Twenty-five of them are fugitives with criminal records and will be transferred to prosecutors across the country.

Victims described being held behind towering concrete walls and electric fencing designed to prevent escape, with armed guards stationed outside. Most were forced to participate in scam operations, including taking so-called “fraud certification exams” arranged by the crime syndicates. Those who failed to meet "performance" quotas were brutally beaten. Police have recently arrested several ringleaders and recruitment agents tied to these human trafficking networks.

In the second half of last year, over 7,000 people were released from scam compounds across Myanmar, with each country responsible for repatriating its own citizens. For those once resigned to a life of captivity, the journey home marks a long-awaited escape from what had felt like a living hell.
