One online creator is stepping outside of her comfort zone to bring Taiwan’s Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage to foreign, English-speaking audiences.

Introducing the Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage in English, Joyce Chiu (邱怡澍) is being called the Mazu translator. With nearly 100,000 subscribers on YouTube and 50,000 followers on Instagram, the creator is an avid online promoter of Taiwanese culture.
Chiu is determined to document the religious event with English-speaking audiences, unfazed by the massive crowds and intense heat, but says she has encountered other challenges, such as not knowing how to translate the vocabulary.
As Miss Taiwan, Chiu represented Taiwan at the 2019 Miss International competition and placed in the top 20. Her other recent accomplishments include first place in a religious costume competition at the Beigang Art Pavilion and performing diabolo at a UN-hosted event.
Chiu says she hopes to travel abroad to further introduce her culture to the rest of the world.
