Featuring footage collected over the span of 15 years with 115 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, the Eastern Broadcasting Company’s NT$40 million (US$1.2 million) documentary “Guardians of our planet” is set to premiere on May 23. Following a trailer presentation this Thursday, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said that the documentary is “unimaginable,” in more ways than one.

Covering 82 species over 15 years, Lai remarked that the speed at which these regions are being destroyed and species driven to extinction is beyond imagination. Lai also highlighted Director Claire Shu’s (舒夢蘭) ambition, also calling it unimaginable.

The project doesn’t only document the Arctic region, but also the future of Taiwan, according to Shu, who says that people have to understand in order to care, and must care to truly bring about change.

Lai says saving the Earth is not up to the director or production team, and that the responsibility lies with the government. Lai established the National Climate Change Committee after taking office as president, involving industries, government entities, academia, and researchers in the challenge to reduce carbon emissions. The president calls upon everyone in Taiwan to lead by example in responding to climate change.
