Penghu is about to enter its peak tourist season. In addition to its more well-known attractions, the island also offers a hidden itinerary featuring its unique local customs.

This crowd waits by the harbor, armed with cartons, baskets, and even umbrellas as the ship’s crew throws handfuls of treats. They push and shove, scrambling to catch them. In this fishing village, it’s customary that a new ship entering the port must circle it three times, praying for blessings, then throw “good luck” ashore in the form of sweets.

Boatmen usually promote the “throwing luck” activity throughout their local communities, inviting people to participate in the event. One captain explains that the fried mochi, a local specialty snack, symbolizes wealth and happiness.

A pun connects throwing good luck with throwing mochi. The “ji” in “ㄇㄨㄚˇㄐㄧˊ” is a homophone with the character “ji” meaning “auspicious.”

A shopkeeper in Penghu said that the events are lively and attract a lot of people, including curious tourists. Anytime a new boat is launched, they pick up fried mochi and other candies, in addition to setting off firecrackers.

The next time you take a trip to Penghu, this is one activity off the beaten track that you’ll want to catch.
