An asteroid named “Chenchengpo” after Taiwanese painter and politician Chen Cheng-po (陳澄波) has been officially approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) after its discovery 18 years ago.

On August 6, 2007, astronomers Lin Chi-sheng (林啟生) of National Central University and Ye Quanzhi (葉泉志) of the University of Maryland discovered the asteroid and decided to name it after Chen to highlight his artistic achievements and spiritual demeanor. This year, 130 years following the artist’s birth in 1895, the asteroid numbered 661666 has officially been recognized by the IAU.

Singer-songwriter Hsieh Ming-yu (謝銘祐) kicked off an award ceremony this Monday by performing the song “Draw a Star”, composed by Hsieh and You Yuan-kiang (游源鏗). The event, held at the National Taiwan Museum Railway Ministry Park, simultaneously launched an exhibition of Chen’s works.
