Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced on Friday that the ongoing influenza outbreak, which has led to the highest death toll in a decade, is anticipated to persist through March. In response, the government has extended its free antiviral medication program until March 15.

Under the expanded program, doctors can now prescribe government-funded antiviral medications without needing rapid flu tests for patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms, especially if their family members, colleagues, or classmates show similar symptoms. This measure aims to guarantee timely treatment for those affected by the virus.

The CDC reports that the severity levels of this flu season have exceeded those of the past four years. Officials attribute the prolonged outbreak to several factors, including the recent Lantern Festival celebrations, the onset of the new school semester, and dropping temperatures. The agency underscores the importance of maintaining proper hand hygiene and adhering to cough etiquette during this time.

Health authorities strongly encourage eligible individuals, particularly those over 65 and young children without flu shots, to get vaccinated without delay. They also advise anyone experiencing flu symptoms to seek medical attention promptly and rest at home until fully recovered before returning to work or school.
