The Taipei City Government submitted a special request last month for the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism to visit Taiwan for the Taipei Lantern Festival and other events. However, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced on Friday that, following a comprehensive government assessment, the request has been denied. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) expressed regret over the decision, stressing that the more strained cross-strait relations become, the greater the need for communication and exchanges.
The MAC reiterated that cross-strait tourism matters involving public authority fall under the jurisdiction of the central government. It reminded local governments and relevant private associations to comply with regulations governing such activities to safeguard national interests and avoid legal violations.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Chiang voiced his disappointment, emphasizing the importance of open communication and dialogue to improve cross-strait relations.
MAC Chairperson Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) previously explained that the rejection was partly due to the late submission of the application. He also cited the Shanghai Taiwan Affairs Office’s alleged obstruction as a factor. The MAC had issued warnings through appropriate channels that such actions were inappropriate and harmful to both sides, but the situation remained unresolved.
