U.S. President Donald Trump recently indicated he would impose tariffs on imported semiconductors, raising public concern over the potential impact the move would have on Taiwan’s exports. In response to media inquiries, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday that as part of the global high-tech supply chain, Taiwan’s chips are integrated into American products, demonstrating that Taiwan is not a competitor to the U.S.

Since taking office, President Trump has proposed various tariff increases and announced that semiconductors, steel, and other products would be next. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said it understands that the Trump administration has its policy agenda and has taken note of the developments.

The ministry highlighted, however, the strong U.S.-Taiwan partnership in high-tech industries. It pointed out chips produced in Taiwan are ultimately assembled into computers, communication electronics, and automotive products of well-known brands like iPhones and Teslas before being sold by these companies. This makes Taiwan a reliable partner as Taiwan’s semiconductor industry can even support American businesses.

The ministry said it is monitoring policy developments and that Taiwan’s representative office in the U.S. continues to maintain direct communication with American officials.
