After seven years of hard work, these four prized police pups are ready to relax and enjoy their retirement.
Four pioneering members of Taichung's K-9 unit are transitioning into retirement after nearly seven years of service. These skilled dogs have contributed significantly to both drug and explosive detection as well as security for major events like the U-23 Baseball World Cup and elections. The police department has received nearly a hundred adoption applications for these distinguished canine officers.
The retiring dogs include Pinky, Bobby, Tiny, and Candy. On Tuesday, the Taichung Criminal Investigation Corps held a farewell ceremony during which the dogs received honorary badges.
Two K-9 handlers have stepped up to adopt retiring police dogs, despite annual care costs of around NT$70,000 (US$2,000) per dog. Chi Fang-rong (齊芳容) has offered a spacious property for one of the dogs, while another handler noted that working with them brought him luck in his marriage and family life.
Lin Heng-sheng (林恆生), the K-9 unit chief, pledged to ensure excellent retirement conditions for these loyal servants. The unit prepared toys, treats, and joint supplements as farewell gifts. These four founding members of the K-9 unit, who have diligently protected Taichung's safety and fought crime, officially retired on Christmas Eve, marking the end of their distinguished service.
