The Foreign Ministry will officially implement an online application for passport renewal service starting January 1, 2025. The decision follows a successful trial period, initially launched in September and further expanded in November, that showed the application process was well-received by the public.
Taiwan nationals can use the online passport renewal application service by inputting their ID number and completing an online payment. After 10 working days, they can collect their new passport at the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or branch offices of the Foreign Ministry by showing their national identification card and receipt.
Citizens applying for the service must be legal adults who hold household registration in Taiwan, and the details recorded on their passport data page must not need any changes or updates. Detailed instructions can be found on the BOCA website.
As there will no longer be a quota limit for the number of online applicants, and online processing streamlines passport application and renewal, eliminating the need to stand in line for long periods of time, it is hoped that Taiwanese citizens will make good use of the new service.
