Taipei 101 put on a special display on December 22, celebrating the 90th anniversary of Taiwan and Guatemala’s establishment of diplomatic relations. Both countries' national flags and a handshake pattern were lit up on the building during an event hosted by the Central America Trade Office (CATO) and attended by CATO Deputy Secretary-General Hsieh Pei-fen (謝佩芬), Director Violeta S. H. Hsu (徐韶慧), and envoys from many countries stationed in Taiwan.

Guatemalan Ambassador to Taiwan Luis Raúl Estévez López said that he hopes the friendship between the two nations will last forever. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) pointed out that 90 years proves distance does not affect brotherly friendship and that in the future Taiwan and Guatemala can continue to cooperate and face challenges together.

In his speech, Lin said that this year is of special significance to both countries, as they not only celebrate their 90th anniversary but also elected new governments. He thanked Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez for attending and jointly witnessing Guatemala’s deep friendship with Taiwan. He emphasized that Taiwan and Guatemala share the values of freedom and democracy and have had close exchanges in health care, economic trade, talent cultivation, tourism, and infrastructure over the years. Lin also underscored his appreciation for Guatemala’s firm voice in support of Taiwan on the international stage.

López pointed out that the two countries have successfully achieved the vision they had when they decided to establish diplomatic relations 90 years ago, which is creating a partnership of cooperation, integrity, and mutual respect. He said that though the 90-year friendship has sometimes been challenged, Guatemala has found a friend, and a treasure, in Taiwan.
