President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) spoke at the 12th National Science and Technology Conference of the Cabinet on Monday, where he mentioned that the 2025 budget will increase to NT$196.5 billion (almost US$6 billion) to reflect a focus on scientific and technological development.
Lai emphasized that Taiwan must establish a firm grounding for, and commitment to both the 5+2 Industrial Innovation Plan, and the five Trustworthy Industries. He mentioned that 2025’s science and technology budget will see an increase of NT$7.7 billion (over US$237 million) representing the government’s emphasis on the technology industry.
The president also spoke on the Economic Development Council’s six regional flagship plans which will develop Taiwan’s regional special industries, as well as rail, highway, medical, culture, tourism, housing, and more in each county and city. Additionally, 140 important construction projects are being planned for the future, with 100 already underway.
Taiwan ranked highly in multiple global standings for digital competitiveness, R&D, high-tech exports, and student mathematics performances. President Lai pointed out that Taiwan has the ability, technology, and talent to continue making meaningful scientific and technological progress.
The National Science and Technology Conference is held every four years to brainstorm and discuss science and technology policy and development for the upcoming four-year term. This year’s conference began Monday and included such important guests as President Lai, TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家), and other heads of relevant ministries, commissions, universities, and industries.
