Radio Taiwan International’s International Language Division Manager Carlson Huang (黃佳山) has been appointed chairman of the Association for International Broadcasting’s (AIB’s) Executive Committee for the 2024-2026 term. The appointment follows Huang’s service as a member of the board since 2020, and marks the first time the AIB has elected a chairman from an Asian country.
Huang said the position enables him to continue promoting Rti and Taiwan to a global audience, allowing the world to recognize the value of the station while also spotlighting Taiwan on the international media stage. Huang emphasized that cross-strait issues are regularly discussed at AIB meetings, and that sharing Taiwan’s experience in managing fake news and information warfare has prompted the international community to pay more attention to the ways totalitarian countries infiltrate media and undermine press freedom.
Rti has worked hard to foster international connections in recent years. Huang said that during one of the AIB’s quarterly executive committee meetings, former Acting Director of Voice of America (VOA) took the initiative to visit Rti Chairperson Cheryl Lai (賴秀如) last year, hoping the exchange would draw international attention to the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
AIB members include elite media sources such as VOA, the BBC, and NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). Lai described AIB as a democratic alliance in global media and a crucial defender of freedom of speech. She said she is honored that Rti can face the challenges of modern broadcasting alongside renowned media outlets from all over the world through its participation in the AIB.
