President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) arrived in the Marshall Islands on Tuesday, Taipei time, as part of his Smart and Sustainable Development for a Prosperous Austronesian Region Tour. This marks his first state visit to a diplomatic ally since taking office.

Upon arrival, President Lai was greeted by Marshallese President Hilda C. Heine and her cabinet with a formal welcome ceremony, despite rainy weather. President Heine emphasized that rain symbolizes blessings in Marshallese culture, expressing hope for strengthened ties.

During his tightly packed two-day, one-night visit, Lai addressed the Marshallese Parliament, highlighting Taiwan and the Marshall Islands' shared Austronesian heritage, democratic values, and fruitful bilateral cooperation. He also announced Taiwan’s offer of preferential loans to replace aging aircraft for Marshall Islands Airlines.

Lai also highlighted Taiwan's support for the Marshall Islands in addressing food security, healthcare, and climate change, including the opening of an AI and telemedicine center at Majuro Hospital, groundbreaking for the government building project, and meetings with local officials and communities.

Lai further commended the Marshall Islands' leadership in international forums advocating for Taiwan and expressed hope for continued collaboration on global issues. 

Lai departs for Tuvalu, the second stop on his Pacific tour, on Wednesday.
