Former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) departed for Canada Wednesday evening to attend the 2024 Halifax International Security Forum (HISF), which will take place in Nova Scotia this Friday through Sunday.
According to a post on her Facebook page, Tsai will deliver a speech at the forum conveying to the international community the Taiwanese people’s determination to safeguard democracy and freedom. She said that she will emphasize Taiwan’s intent to continue contributing to global stability and prosperity.
Tsai indicated the HISF is an important event for democratic countries around the world to discuss security issues and strengthen strategic cooperation. Hundreds of experts and politicians from dozens of countries who specialize in national defense and strategic security are invited to the forum each year.
Per their website, HISF was founded in 2009 as part of the United States’ German Marshall Fund, and is now an independent organization. Its mission is to promote closer cooperation among democratic countries and better enable them to respond to the world’s most pressing security challenges.
