Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) announced that TSMC plans to construct approximately one new fabrication plant annually in Taiwan over the coming years. The statement came during a legislative committee meeting on Wednesday, addressing concerns about TSMC’s commitment to domestic investment amid its global expansion strategy.
Regarding TSMC’s overseas ventures, particularly its significant presence in the U.S., Kuo noted that the cultural differences have prompted extensive workforce exchanges. Approximately 700 American engineers were sent to Taiwan for training, while TSMC sent around 600 people to the U.S. The company’s substantial investment of US$20-30 billion in its American operations reflects careful strategic planning.
When questioned about the possibility of relocating 2-nanometer advanced process technology to the U.S., Kuo emphasized that TSMC’s decision would be driven by market demand and profitability considerations. He stressed that as a business entity, TSMC would only transfer advanced processes overseas if financially viable.
