Taiwan's Interior Ministry announced 424 R&D substitute service units for 2024. Eligible draftees are expected to fulfill conscription through roles in industries like semiconductors and research institutions.

In Taiwan, all eligible male citizens of military age are required to fulfill active-duty military service or complete at least four months of military training. Since 2000, an alternative civilian service option, known as the substitute service, has been available, allowing qualified draftees to contribute through specialized roles in designated professions.

On Sunday, the Interior Ministry announced the approval of 424 eligible units for the upcoming year’s R&D substitute service program. Positions span industries such as semiconductors, machinery, and electronics and include companies like TSMC, MediaTek, and AU Optronics. Research institutions like Academia Sinica and the Industrial Technology Research Institute are also included in the selection pool.

The program has engaged over 51,000 participants since launching in 2008 and its participants have contributed significantly to innovation, generating more than 5,000 patents and publishing over 10,000 academic papers. The program creates an economic impact measured in billions of New Taiwan dollars annually. It also ensures that mandatory conscription does not disrupt the draftee’s career development while still contributing to the nation's growth and innovation.
