An array of offerings spread across thousands of tables, lanterns adorning the streets, and an eye-catching dragon sculpture. At one Chiayi temple last weekend, 21,800 tables were set up for a grand 12-year temple ceremony. But some attendees were surprised to spot unconventional offerings like ostriches and crocodiles.
One participant remarked that using ostriches and crocodiles is just so extravagant. And another speculates about the cost, saying that crocodile, in particular, isn't something you commonly see or eat anymore.
A local worshipper who chose ostriches says the choice stemmed from a desire to stand out. He says ostriches, costing approximately NT$40,000 (US$1,240), symbolized grandeur for the event. They also prepared around 700 to 800 chickens and ducks for the ceremony and placed two ostriches at the forefront as they are the largest birds.
The event organizers say the items were entirely prepared by the worshippers themselves and that the extravagance showcases both creativity and the deep faith of the community.
