Phonetic translations add to Taiwan's vibrant street food scene, creating the occasional entertaining misunderstanding, even among locals.

A recent social media post has sparked an interesting online discussion about a unique food item at a Taiwanese fried chicken stand. The confusion began when a customer encountered the “goose mother” (鵝母) on the menu, leaving many wondering if it was related to actual geese. As the vendor explained, the term is the Taiwanese pronunciation of burdock root (牛蒡), a popular deep-fried item.

Interestingly, some people pronounce it as “goose mother,” while others say “cow mother,” but both names refer to the same item, burdock root.

The conversation also highlighted other uniquely named items found at these stands. “Happy encounter” (喜相逢) was revealed to be deep-fried smelt fish, while "ji-wan" (基丸) is the local pronunciation for sail fish balls.

Whether it be goose or not, the influence of multiple languages in Taiwan certainly leads to some novel discussions.
