National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) said that the incoming Trump administration is likely to adopt two primary policy directions, “America First” and “Containment of China.” Tsai gave his observations during a Foreign and National Defense Committee meeting at the Legislature on Thursday.

Regarding Trump’s national security appointments and their potential impact on Taiwan-U.S. relations, Tsai noted that the U.S. could adopt a comprehensive strategic approach addressing geopolitics, economic and trade disengagement, supply chain security, as well as export controls. Tsai adds policies will be monitored to determine their potential impact on Taiwan.

In terms of Taiwan-U.S. relations, Tsai said that Taiwan will continue to advance cooperation with the U.S. based on Taiwan’s national and strategic interests, stressing that Taiwan is not simply seeking a free ride. He adds that Taiwan aims to maximize mutual benefits and demonstrate to the international community that Taiwan is an essential partner on economic and security issues.

Tsai said Taiwan has had close, positive collaboration with past U.S. administrations. He expressed appreciation for the Biden administration's support over the past four years. He adds that Taiwan looks forward to and will be proactive in working with Trump’s administration over the next four years.
