At the 2024 APEC Summit, held in Peru, Taiwan is looking to secure support to join CPTPP before its commission meeting in Vancouver, Canada.
This year’s 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, held in Peru, is drawing global attention as it marks the U.S. President Joe Biden’s last before leaving office. It is also the first for Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and will also see the attendance of Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平). The world is closely watching the interactions among global leaders.
All participating nations, with the exception of the U.K., are also member states of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Taiwan aims to seize the opportunity to secure its bid to join the alliance, having submitted its application in September 2021. Following this APEC leaders’ meeting, CPTPP’s rotating chair country, Canada, is expected to convene the commission meeting at the end of November to discuss admission applications.
Taiwan’s representative is Senior advisor to the president Lin Hsin-i (林信義), who returns to the summit after a 19-year hiatus. In 2005, the former economics minister and deputy premier represented Taiwan at the APEC summit in South Korea, and was remembered for a brief yet symbolic exchange with Hu Jintao (胡锦涛), the Chinese President at the time,
At the airport, Lin expressed confidence in accomplishing his mission, to secure support for Taiwan’s bid to join CPTPP, as Taiwan is able to play to its strength in meeting the summit’s goals in digital healthcare, agriculture, and enhancing small and medium enterprises competitiveness.
