With the U.S. presidential election imminently taking place Tuesday local time, the Foreign Ministry has responded to media inquiries, detailing that the United States is Taiwan’s greatest friend and therefore its election is of utmost importance.

Current Vice-President and Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican former president Donald Trump have been running neck-and-neck for weeks, which may mean the results will not be announced right away. This election will come down to swing states Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where votes may take days to count.

Regardless of the outcome, Foreign Ministry Director-General Jeff Liu (劉永健) said that they are confident with Taiwan’s cross-party support in the U.S., and expect Taiwan-US relations will continue to develop steadily after the election.

In response to Trump's recent remarks about Taiwan "stealing the U.S. chip industry" and possible "protection money," the Foreign Ministry reiterated that it will not comment on any statements made by candidates at this time.
