With the Legislature scheduled to review the Referendum Act, lawmakers from the opposition KMT party proposed several drafts on Monday that seek to bind referendums to general elections, extend the validity of referendum results, and require the resignation of officials who fail to implement referendum results.
In response, Central Election Commission chairperson Lee Chin-yung (李進勇) told reporters that binding referendums with general election led to chaos in 2018, and urged legislators from all parties to review the amendments carefully to avoid repeating the past. Lee says that "resignation" is a political responsibility that should be resolved politically rather than prescribed in legal texts.
DPP legislators from the ruling party suggested holding public hearings to gather opinions from all sectors before substantively reviewing the amendments. Internal Administration Committee Chairperson and KMT legislator Hsu Hsin-ying (徐欣瑩) announced that the Committee will invite experts and scholars to two public hearings before formally reviewing the amendment drafts.
