The Foreign Ministry expressed sincere gratitude to the European Parliament (EP) on Friday for its overwhelming vote denouncing China’s distortion of UN Resolution 2758 to exclude Taiwan's participation in the international community. On Thursday, the EP passed the pro-Taiwan resolution with a strong majority of 432-60, with 71 abstentions.
The statement’s 22 points included emphasis that UN Resolution 2758 involves the status of China, but does not establish its sovereignty over Taiwan, nor does it make any decision on Taiwan's future membership in the UN or any other international organization. Further, it states that Taiwan has never been part of China. The resolution also strongly condemns China's continued military provocations and reiterates that the EU firmly opposes any unilateral change in the status quo of the Taiwan Strait.
Further points elaborate that Taiwan is a key partner of the EU and encourages member states to continue deepening cooperation in economic investment, semiconductor and other high-tech industry supply chains, disaster prevention and relief, national defense, and countering foreign misinformation. Additionally, it pledges to continue to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and other related organizations.
The Foreign Ministry calls on the international community to jointly take concrete actions to oppose the “one-China principle" and cooperate to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
