Hurricane Helene tore across the Southeastern United States at the end of September, resulting in over 200 casualties and extreme damage across six states. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta donated US$200,000 to the Red Cross Georgia headquarters on behalf of the Taiwanese government this Tuesday to assist in rebuilding efforts.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta stated on Tuesday that the donation was witnessed by Georgia Senator Michael Rhett and State Representative Teri Anulewicz, co-chairs of the Georgia State Legislature’s Taiwan Connection.

The office noted that representatives from the Compatriots Emergency Relief Association, the Medical Association, local non-governmental organizations and relevant overseas Chinese leaders were also present at the donation ceremony to share their humanitarian and emergency rescue experiences. The office served a spread of Taiwanese food and drinks to further honor the organizations’ active disaster relief efforts.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta stated that this event was the first time most of the staff at the Red Cross Georgia headquarters came into contact with Taiwanese culture and representatives. The Red Cross expressed their gratitude to the Taiwanese government and people for their immediate concern and donations, calling it the best demonstration of humanitarian assistance, and emphasizing that every penny can be valuable resources for disaster victims.
