Former President, Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), was met with a pleasant surprise during her visit to France as part of her European trip. A Taiwanese couple, who run a local bakery, greeted her with freshly made croissants, a known favorite of the former president.
Chuang Po-hsuan (莊伯宣) and Wang Chih-ya (王之亞) opened their patisserie over two years ago, and have won over local customers with their authentic French baked goods, incorporating Taiwanese fruits to create unique flavors.
During the exchange, the conversation shifted to their four rescued cats from Taiwan. Tsai, a self-professed cat person, playfully inquired if the cats had picked up any French, drawing laughter from the crowd.
President Tsai's European trip included a stop in Czechia for the 28th Forum 2000 in Prague where she delivered a speech despite recent Chinese military drills around Taiwan. French bipartisan parliamentarians warmly welcomed her, undeterred by China's objections.
Even after stepping down from office, Tsai continues to work tirelessly to strengthen Taiwan's international relations. This unexpected encounter with a passionate Taiwanese couple added a moment of pain to her otherwise formal diplomatic efforts.
