Digital Minister Huang Yen-nun (黃彥男) attended the Legislature on Monday to give updates on the status of digital attacks against Taiwan after three private Taiwanese companies were targeted by Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks on Sunday.
Huang said that private companies, in addition to government agencies, are now the targets of pro-Russian hackers. The official websites of companies including UMC, Wistron, and Formosa Plastics were targeted with similar DDoS attacks on Sunday. However, the defense minister insisted that though the attacks took place, they were not successful. Huang went on to specify that although Taiwan is the target of hackers from many different groups, there have not yet been any serious outages or damages resulting from these attacks.
On the subject of addressing digital threats, Huang spoke on the current status of the Digital Minstry’s Anti-Fraud Reporting and Inquiry Platform. The platform aims to both give the public a resource to report suspicious messages and posts across various social media platforms, as well as completely automate the collection of reports, freeing up ministry personnel for more demanding tasks. Huang reminded the public that the current iteration is still a test version available for public trial and feedback. The official platform is not expected to be launched until the end of the year.
