Ruifang District has had the highest accumulated rainfall across Taiwan since Typhoon Krathon appeared according to the New Taipei City Government’s disaster response team, which met for the sixth time regarding this typhoon this Thursday.
As of Thursday morning, the city had received 115 reports including collapsed fences, fallen power lines, detached signs, and 47 fallen trees alongside roads. Other damages include flash flooding and small-scale rockfalls. New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) said some residents’ homes had flooded, and that they were being relocated to hotels. The 12-hour cumulative rainfall had amassed to 338.5 mm, the highest in the nation.
The Central Disaster Prevention and Response Council has issued a yellow alert for landslides along rivers in the Ruifang and Shuangxi Districts, alerting residents and travelers to be cautious of falling rocks and landslides in northeast Taiwan, especially mountainous areas. The fire department reported that some of the rockfall had surrounded the railway near the Jui-fang Industrial High School, but that it wouldn’t affect the railway’s operations.
Typhoon Krathon is expected to make landfall in the Kaohsiung area, slowly working its way north as it weakens. Officials say the level-7 windstorm will likely downgrade before it reaches New Taipei City, but that the area will still be heavily affected by heavy rains and strong winds.
