Early this week China’s National Security Ministry accused Taiwanese hackers of carrying out cyber attacks against China, Hong Kong, and Macao.

The photos and names of three Taiwanese active-duty soldiers were published by Chinese state media alongside claims that they were behind cyber attacks made by hacker organization Anonymous 64 targeting Chinese national security agencies.

China’s National Security Ministry has claimed that Anonymous 64 is a pro-independence hacking team that belongs to Taiwan’s cyber warfare wing since the beginning of this year.

Taiwan’s Information, Communications, and Electronic Force Command (ICEFCOM) responded by refuting the claims, and stating that the PLA is undermining regional peace. ICEFCOM was established during Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) presidency in 2017, and is regarded as the fourth branch of the Armed Forces.

Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) said the accusation is baseless, and commented that the CCP is the largest perpetrator of malicious cyber attacks against democratic nations. Legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) additionally commented that China’s approach involves intimidation and threats, which is apparent through their new guideline that aims to severely punish Taiwan independence diehards.

According to the Taiwan government, China’s accusations simply do not compute.
