Residents of Keelung were surprised by the sudden appearance of mushrooms along the streets. However, one must be cautious when considering eating them as these mushrooms are of the poisonous variety.

Recent heavy rains have caused a potentially deadly mushroom species to sprout along the roadsides of Keelung. The Chlorophyllum molybdites, commonly known as the "green-spored parasol" or "false parasol," have been spotted growing in grassy areas near residential neighborhoods.

This species is often referred to as “the most troublesome poisonous mushroom” in Taiwan, since it bears a striking resemblance to edible varieties like the parasol mushroom and termite mushroom. Consuming the green-spored parasol can lead to severe gastrointestinal distress.

Dr. Tzung-Hai Yen (顏宗海), Director of the Clinical Poison Center at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, warns that ingestion of these mushrooms can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Local authorities urge residents to exercise caution and avoid picking wild mushrooms.

Deputy Director Tsai Fu-ning (蔡馥嚀) of the  Keelung City Government Department of Economic Affairs advises the public to refrain from eating unfamiliar mushrooms and to seek immediate medical attention if accidentally consumed.

Experts recommend buying mushrooms only from certified agricultural product vendors or farmers’ associations as there isn’t mush-room for mistakes when it comes to food safety.
