Ambassador to Haiti Hu Cheng-hao (胡正浩) has completed the procedures to reassume his post representing Taiwan, according to the Foreign Ministry. Hu, who had previously held the position from May 2017 to August 2019, passed on President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) greetings to Transitional Presidential Council in Haiti Head Edgard Leblanc Fils and also reaffirmed Taiwan’s friendship with Haiti.
Since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, gang violence has severely undermined efforts to restore order. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry pointed out that the two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for 68 years and have cooperated in agriculture, medical care, infrastructure, and other fields. With Haiti’s general elections planned for 2025, the first since 2016, the ministry emphasized that the Taiwanese government is very willing to assist in gradually restoring social order and a constitutional system.
From 2022, Taiwan has provided more than 800 bulletproof vests for military and police and will be continuing to cooperate with the Haitian government to target issues such as food security and public health.
