TSMC has disputed claims by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that TSMC is considering building a factory in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The WSJ quoted sources as saying that TSMC executives recently visited the UAE to discuss building a factory. Other sources also mentioned that Samsung is considering investing in chip manufacturing projects in the UAE in the coming years.
TSMC said that while the company always welcomes constructive discussions promoting the development of the semiconductor industry, they are currently focusing on existing global expansion projects and have no specific plans for other overseas investments.
TSMC currently has overseas factories in Arizona in the United States, Kumamoto, Japan, and Dresden, Germany. Of those, Kumamoto’s first wafer fab will mass-produce four types of chips in the fourth quarter of this year, while the Arizona factory is on track to mass-produce 4-nanometer chips in the first half of 2025. As for the Dresden factory, it is expected to step up to mass production in 2027.
