Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) spoke Friday, addressing traffic preparedness over Mid-Autumn Festival, concerns over a pending railway union strike, and tourism goals.

Concerning preparations for the Mid-Autumn festival, the ministry is preparing for heavy traffic in the next four days. Last year traffic along national freeways was quite heavy. This year, while there is expected to be less traffic, contingency measures are still being implemented, with the goal of limiting congestion over the holiday as much as possible. Chen also expressed his heartfelt thanks to all of Taiwan's transit workers for their efforts.

The minister also spoke to the Railway Union workers' clash with Taiwan Railway Corporation (TRC). The disagreement originated with Union workers' dissatisfaction that bonuses will be handed out as gift certificates rather than cash in the coming year. Chen expressed his thanks that the workers had remained at their post over previous New Year holidays, emphasizing the need for clear communication and coordination between all parties. Chen further expressed support for both the workers and the company, saying that while the government does support holiday bonuses, ideally workers should be satisfied in their positions, as their cooperation with TRC is what allows most Taiwanese to return home for such important holidays.

Smooth transportation is especially important this year as Taiwan's tourism industry is still striving to reach a goal of 10 million international tourists.  Chen affirmed that all staffers are working hard, with spokespeople such as Japanese actor Satoshi Tsumabuki and Super Junior's Kyuhyun. Chen said the government will continue to work hard on all fronts, encouraging the public to offer their support as well.
