On Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecasted that the tropical storm Bebinca could develop into a typhoon as soon as this Friday. Forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan (張承傳) spoke regarding how it could affect Taiwan.

Chang explained how winds will push northeast on Friday, likely causing brief showers across northern Taiwan. In the afternoon, mountainous areas in southern Taiwan could see brief thunderstorms in and south of Miaoli. Yunlin County, Nantou County, and areas further south may also experience localized heavy rain.

Beginning Saturday, Bebinca is expected to approach the Ryukyu Islands as it travels northwest, bringing along more rainfall across Taiwan, Chang said.

Chang pointed out that Bebinca will likely be closest to Taiwan on Sunday and Monday. Central and southern Taiwan can expect thunderstorms, while northern Taiwan will likely experience brief showers. Chang cautioned this could bring about swells for several days that will intensify as the storm gets closer to the coast.

Chang said there are still opportunities for other tropical disturbances to develop in subsequent low-pressure belts, and that the CWA will continue to observe the situation.
