Commenting on the incommunicado detention of former Taipei Mayor and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) accused President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) of instigating “green terror” to target those who oppose the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Taiwan independence.
In response, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) emphasized that Taiwan's judicial system operates independently, in contrast to China’s authoritarian system, where legal institutions serve the ruling party.
DPP Legislative Caucus Secretary-General Rosalia Wu (吳思瑤) also criticized China's involvement, stating that Beijing’s actions are part of a larger effort to discredit Taiwan’s independent judiciary. She added that cooperation between China, the Kuomintang (KMT), and the People’s Party (TPP) is aimed at defending corruption. Wu also noted that the TAO’s interference extended to Taiwan's internal affairs, including criticisms of Taiwan’s defense budget, revealing its political motives.
KMT Legislator Lin Pei-hsiang (林沛祥), while dismissing claims of a coordinated effort between China and Taiwan’s opposition parties, urged the DPP to reflect on its failures in judicial reform over the past eight years.
Meanwhile, TPP Spokesperson Celina Wu (吳怡萱) responded by acknowledging the challenges facing Taiwan's judiciary, calling for urgent reforms to preserve the country's democracy, rule of law, and human rights.
